Cortland High Theatre will present The Secret Garden as their 2017 fall musical. Performances will begin at 7:30pm in Cortland High School’s auditorium on Thursday, November 16th, Friday, November 17th, and Saturday, November 18th. $6 pre-sale tickets can be purchased online at: cortlandhightheatre.yapsody.com. Tickets are also available at the door for $8 apiece.
Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved Victorian classic, The Secret Garden, blossoms anew in this enchanting musical by Pulitzer Prize-winner Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon. When young Mary Lennox loses her parents to a cholera outbreak in India, she is sent to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven, who lives in an imposing, secluded manor on the British heath. Inside the haunting house upon the hill, Mary finds a reclusive, long-suffering collection of souls. Since her Aunt Lily’s death, Mary’s uncle has pushed away his surviving loved ones, leaving his bedridden son, Colin, alone. Sickly Colin, hidden away in the depths of the manner, bears the guilt of his mother’s death on his crippled shoulders. When Mary discovers her Aunt Lily’s hidden garden, locked shut and overgrown with vines, stubborn Mary is determined to revive the beauty that once was. Surrounded by spirits from the past, who both warn and welcome her, Mary begins to peel away the layers of sadness that cover the house and the garden, showing us the power that “one small girl” can have when she “wants things to grow.”

It is directed by Susannah Feuerherm with musical direction by Benjamin Wells and technical direction by Madisyn Zimmer. The cast is led by Olivia McKenna (Mary), Jon Gesin (Archibald), Jason Gore (Neville), Sophie Reyngoudt (Lily), Séamus Gailor (Dickon), Mackenzie Brackett (Martha), and Zach Michales (Colin). Also featured are Conley Egnor, Katie Phetteplace, Cameron Landon, Charlie Rowe, Michaella Ferro, Jenna Saltsman, Nick Derado, Emma Brackett, Madelyn Guido, Katie Woodard, Guiherme Borges, Hunter Sherman, Chris Allen, Jennifer Newman, and Matt Lipfort. The Children’s Chorus contains Zahara Petrella, Ethan Gibbs, Sarena Eaton, Eden Sears, Brayden Partigianoni, Lillian Tinker, Ashley Merritt, Alison Compagni, Owen Michales, Victoria Ramiza, Peyton Burns, and Payge Romano.
